Islamabad—A suicide bomber killed at least 19
people including 15 police personnel and injured
forty others in an attack on police guarding an
Islamist rally to mark the anniversary of an
army raid on the radical Red Mosque.
According to eye witnessses account, a bearded
man about 30 to 35 years of age walked into the
police contingent and apparently blew himself
up. The whole event at the mosque went smoothly
but then the suicide bomber targeted the
security forces,” interior ministry chief Rehman
Malik told reporters at the scene.
Karachi—Ten persons died and 17 others injured
as a four-storey building collapsed in the
Baldia Town locality Karachi on Sunday. About
six to seven families were residing in this
residential building. According to sources use
of sub-standard construction material may have
resulted in this mishap.
Islamabad—Spokesman Pakistan Muslim League-
Nawaz (PML-N) Siddiqul Farooq has said that the
statement of Co-Chairman Pakistan People’s Party
(PPP) Asif Ali Zardari in which he held former
prime minister Nawaz Sharif responsible for
Kargil war based on ill-will and demanded
formation of commission for Kargil war
investigation. He said India has completed
investigation of Kargil war and also tabled
report in its Parliament but in Pakistan no
commission was established.
Islamabad—Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza
Gilani will leave for Kuala Lumpur today
(Monday) on his threeday visit to Malaysia to
attend the D-8 Conference. On the sidelines of
the Conference the Prime Minister will also hold
meetings with various heads of government
including the Prime Minister of Malaysia and the
Chief Executive of Bangladesh.
Peshawar—The talks between political
administration (PA) and 16-member representative
peace jirga led by Haji Umar Gul and Malik
Shaukat concluded here at Khyber House on Sunday
as both sides agreed to continue talks to solve
problems in light of Islam, tribal norms and
traditions. Political Agent Khyber Agency Capt (Retd)
Tariq Hayat told reporters that Jirga is
integral part of our tribal culture and hoped
that this consultation process will help reach
in a solution which was acceptable to all. He
said that full cooperation would be made with
Jirga members.
New Delhi—Pakistan
and India will discuss to launch new Confidence
Building Measures in occupied Kashmir in a
Working Group meeting on July 10 in Islamabad.
Talking to APP, Afrasiab, Pakistan Deputy High
Commissioner said an Indian delegation will
travel to Pakistan to attend the meeting of
Technical Working Group of both the countries on
cross LoC CBMs.
Jalalabad—An
Afghan district governor said 27 people, most of
them women and children, were killed Sunday when
US-led coalition air strikes hit a wedding party
in eastern Afghanistan, but the force insisted
only militants were killed. “I confirm that 27
people, three of them men and 19 of them women
and children, were killed,” said Hamisha Gul,
governor of Deh Bala district in the eastern
province of Nangarhar.
Karachi—Defending champions Sri Lanka succeeded
in retaining the Asia Cup title, defeating India
by a convincing margin of 100 runs in the final
here at the National Stadium on Sunday. Sri
Lanka won the championship for the fourth time,
second in a row, after winning in 2004.
Tehran—Iran indicated Saturday
that it has no plans to meet a key Western
demand that it stop enriching uranium, a day
after Tehran sent the European Union a response
to an international offer of incentives for
halting enrichment. The content of that response
has not been made public and there was caution
about the prospects of progress.
