14 die in boiler blast factory collapse

50 feared trapped, rescue work in progress

Lahore—About fourteen people were killed and several others including women and children are trapped under the rubble of a three-storey building of a pharmaceutical company which collapsed due to a boiler explosion at Kharak Stop, Multan Road Lahore on Monday. According to the details, fourteen bodies including that of two women and a child and 12 injured people have been pulled out and shifted to the hospital. Rescue workers and people continue to remove the debris in an effort to fear the approximately 50 people trapped inside.

SC suspends 28 MPs membership

Islamabad—Supreme Court (SC) suspended the membership of 28 members of the Parliament, as the government fails to get 20th Amendment passed. It should be mentioned here the court set February 6 as the deadline to the government to give legal cover to the by-polls and disqualified the lawmakers elected in by-elections.There are nine MNAs and three senators who were disqualified by the apex court. According to a private television channel, a four-member SC bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry heard the case regarding the voter lists on the petition filed by Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan against fake electoral lists of the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Pak whitewash England with third Test win

Dubai—Pakistan’s bowlers sealed an emphatic 71-run win in the third and final Test against England here on Monday; inflicting a 3-0 series whitewash humiliation in the process. Set a daunting 324-run target, England were bowled out for 252 with paceman Umar Gul taking 4-61 and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal (4-67) to help Pakistan achieve a first-ever Test clean sweep against their opponents.

Apex Court orders arrest of culprits by Feb 10

Islamabad—The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday ordered that the culprits behind the murder of MPA Mir Balochistan Bakhtiar Domki’s wife and daughter be arrested by February 10. Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had taken a suo motu notice of the killings on Sunday. The court termed the case as “one of the most sensitive cases in the country”. Hearing a petition filed earlier to the court by the Balochistan High Court Bar during the same hearing, the court told Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI) to submit a comprehensive report about the security situation of the province within the given deadline. The court demanded that the ISI and MI that the report should not only entail the findings of the missing persons’ case and incidents of target killing.

Regional budge to counter foreign move

Islamabad—Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan will hold their second Summit meeting in Islamabad on February 16-17, 2012 apparently aimed at aligning themselves against foreign pressures and tactics that have threatened national interests of the three nations. According to a diplomatic source this is for the first time that all three nations have began realizing that they will be targeted one by one by the powerful countries and lobbies determined to serve the interests of outsiders and not the region. Although there is no officials announcement about Iranian President Ahmedinejad yet but sources have confirmed that preparations for Summit meeting was underway and that Iranian President and Afghan President Karzai are expected to reach early next week.

Afghan peace talks atop agenda

Doha—Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani arrived in Qatar on Monday to discuss Afghan peace efforts in the ultra-rich Gulf state where the Taliban and US officials have begun preliminary contacts. Gilani has “arrived in Doha for a three-day official visit to the country,” the Gulf state’s state news agency QNA reported. “The Prime Minister reiterated stance of his government to support Afghan-led and Afghan-owned initiatives for a stable Afghanistan,” his office quoted him as saying before his departure.

Google to show Punjab archaeology sites

Lahore—A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Punjab government and Google for cooperation in information technology sector at Arfa Software Technology Park, here Monday.

Under the agreement Google will provide access to the historical and tourist attractions of the province on internet to promote worldwide awareness about the rich heritage of the province. Secretary Tourism Dr. Allah Bakhsh Malik and William Fitzgerald of Google Asia signed the document. Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Provincial Finance Minister Kamran Michael, Chairman Planning & Development, Secretary Irrigation, Chairman Information Technology Board and representatives of Google were also present.
