Islamabad—A three-member bench of the Lahore
High Court (LHC) has decided to take unilateral
action against the PML-N Quaid Mian Muhammad
Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz
Sharif in the cases of eligibility for
candidature of PML-N leaders in Lahore on
Thursday. The LHC announced its verdict on the
consecutive absence of Sharif brothers from the
court after the LHC had issued Sharif brothers
several notices to appear before the court.
According to a private TV channel the LHC called
Sharif brothers in the ineligibility cases.
However the court was told that the servant
Muhammad Saleem of Sharif brothers had refused
to receive the court’s notices. Also, another
court’s notice was pasted on the main gate of
Shahbaz house but he did not appear before the
court for the hearing of cases.
Islamabad—All Pakistan Democratic Movement (APDM)
on Thursday threatened to launch civil
disobedience drive and siege PCO judges over
non-restoration of deposed judges.
APDM rejected constitutional amendments through
Finance Bill presented by the coalition
government in the parliament terming them as
aimed at increasing the number of judges in the
superior courts and demanded the impeachment of
President Pervez Musharraf. “APDM formed a
steering committee to submit recommendation by
July 7 and decide the date of sit-in and start a
movement through comprehensive consultations
with lawyers, political parties and other
stakeholders over the issue of restoration of
judges” said, Convener APDM Mehmood Khan
Achakzai.
Four Pakistani soldiers have reportedly been
killed in clashes on the border with
Indian-controlled territory in the disputed
Kashmir region. A Pakistani military spokesman
said that his soldiers exchanged fire with
“unknown miscreants” along the Line of Control
which separates Indian and Pakistani forces.
“Two of our soldiers embraced martyrdom at the
spot and two others injured later died at
hospital,” Major-General Athar Abbas, Pakistani
military spokesman, said on Thursday.
Lahroe/Islamabad—Co-chairman Pakistan People’s
Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari has said that is
not far when his party would announce its
nominee for the post of president who will be a
party worker and on assuming the charge of
office of President he would raise the slogan of
jeeya Bhutto. Addressing the launching ceremony
of Jehangir Badar’s book here at Aiwan-i-Iqbal,
Zardari said the day is not far-off when the
masses will get food, shelter and clothing and
the entire country will be prosperous. He said
some people have started to flee from the
country as they could see the PPP’s caravan
approaching.
Peshawar—Bloody clashes in Kurram agency on
Thursday left at least 18 people dead and around
50 others injured as the security forces
initiated grand operation in the agency with the
help of gunship helicopters. In a first
incidence a bloody skirmish between the law
enforcers and the trouble makers in Sadda Tehsil
of Parachinar, four officials and at least 10
miscreants were killed when the alleged
militants reportedly attacked an official convey
of trucks carrying flour, ghee, medicines and
other edible items for affected people at Sadda
Tehsil.
London—The US military has
lost hundreds of sensitive nuclear missile
components, in the latest embarrassment for The
Pentagon, a foreign newspaper reported Thursday.
Citing US officials familiar with a Pentagon
report, the British daily said the US Air Force
could not account for many sensitive components
previously in its nuclear inventory. One
official put the number at over 1,000, it said.
The latest incident comes after blunders which
saw live nuclear warheads transported over US
skies, and an accidental shipment of nuclear
triggers to Taiwan.
Islamabad—The National Assembly on Thursday
discussed the recommendations moved by the Upper
House of the Parliament for their incorporation
in the national budget for the fiscal year
2008-09. Majority of the parliamentarians
endorsed the recommendations of Senate and
proposed some amendments.
Taking part in the debate, Yousuf Talpur
criticized the bidding of the land of poor
farmers, who could not pay their debt, demanding
the extension of one year in the payment
schedule.
He opposed the grant of subsidy on one
fertilizer.
Pakistan paceman Mohammad Asif will soon be
deported from the United Arab Emirates after
Dubai Public prosecutors dropped drug possession
charges against him, a UAE official said
Thursday. The 25-year-old fast bowler was
arrested at Dubai airport on June 1 on charges
of possessing an illegal drug while returning
home from India after featuring in a tournament.
The case has been dropped against Mohammad Asif
due to “insufficient evidence”... he will be
deported as soon as the police finalize the
procedures,” Mohammad Al Nuaimi, the public
prosecutor who handled Asif’s case, said
Thursday, according to the online version of the
local daily Gulf News.
Peshawar—NWFP Assembly has passed unanimous
protest resolution against US air strike in
Mohmand Agency and has demanded to Afghanistan
and Pakistan to resolve all disputed issues
through dialogue. Resolution was forwarded by
PML-N’s Pir Sabir Shah, Opposition leader Akram
Khan Durrani, Information Minister Mian Iftikhar
Hussain and PPP Sherpao’s Sikandar Sherpao in
the budget session of Assembly on Thursday.
Resolution said US attack is not only a clear
violation of international laws but also a
direct attack on Pakistan’s sovereignty and
freedom.
