Neutrality in elections to be maintained at all costs: Shams

PeSHAWAR—Caretaker Chief Minister NWFP Shamsul Mulk Saturday evening declared in clear terms that neutrality in general elections fixed for January 2008 would be maintained at all cost and chastised all such speculations casting doubts over impartiality of the caretakers.
Talking to media men here at Frontier House, the Caretaker Chief Minister flanked by Provincial Information Minister Imtiaz Hussain Gilani and Secretary Information Omer Afridi, candidly admitted that he had received some reports about involvement of some of his cabinet ministers in the election campaign of the candidates. “I have written a letter to the cabinet ministers to ensure their impartiality and I do hope they will keep their neutrality intact”, the Chief Minister told the media men. However, he further clarified that according to the Election Commission rules there was no bar on the Provincial Minister to participate in the elections. They could take part but at their own expense, he elaborated.

UET, Vienna Varsity to carry out research, exchange academicians

PeSHAWAR—NWFP UET and Vienna University Austria have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to carry out joint research and academic exchanges in the field of computer systems and information technology. The MoU was signed by Prof. Dietmer Dietrich, Head of Institute of Computer Technology (ICT), Vienna University and Prof. M Yahya Chairman Computer Department of System Engineering NWFP UET.
Under the MoU, exchange of graduates and academic and scientific material will take place between the ICT and the Department of Computer System Engineering, NWFP UET Prof. Dietrich emphasized the need to build up faculty to faculty interaction between Pakistani universities and Vienna University, since Austria had already built up a network to carry out different research programs with S. Korea and South Africa further expansion with countries like Pakistan will strengthen the research base and getting the input from talented human resource available in the developing countries. “Austria is known for big names in industrial sector but it is also a home to small and medium industries which have established credibility in the international market, if Pakistan can provide us the brain power, together we can achieve our objectives”, he added.

Stakeholders assure support to make PERRA efforts a success

PeSHAWAR—All the stakeholders have assured their full support to make projects initiated by FAO/SIDA under the ERRA and PERRA in the earthquake hit areas a success.
This assurance was given at the first meeting of the Provincial livelihood Working Group held here at PERRA office the other day after shifting to Peshawar. The meeting was presided over by Director Planning and Technical PERRA, Zubair Asghar Quershi. The meeting besides Country Director Relief International was also attended by Chief Conservator of Forests, Director General Agriculture Research, Director Water Management, Manager Livelihood SRSP.
Provincial Livelihood Coordinator PERRA Jehan Sher, Advisor Agriculture and livestock PERRA, Munawar Khan, senior livelihood Officer PERRA, Shakaib Ahmad delivered presentation to the participants.

Secretary asks doctors to help ailing humanity

PeSHAWAR—The NWFP Secretary Health Abdus Samad Khan has urged the outgoing doctors to try to sooth the miseries of the ailing humanity by providing maximum relief to them as they were belonging to a noble and sacred Profession.
This, he said while addressing Convocation dinner ceremony of Khyber College of Dentistry (KCD) at the auditorium of Khyber Medical College (KMC) last night. The function was also addressed by VC, Khyber Medical University (KMU) Dr. Prof. Daud Khan, Principal KMC Prof Fazal Ahmad and Principal KCD Prof. Qiamuddin.
The Secretary Health said that tremendous steps had been taken for the promotion of health sector and improvement of health institutions in the recent post. “Khyber Medical University is the biggest achievement in this regard which will contribute in the promotion of medical education”, he maintained. Similarly, he said that Saidu and Gomal Medical Colleges had got recognized while steps were under way to get Khyber Girls Medical and Bannu Medical College recognized from PMDC.

DCO urged to check atta prices


PeSHAWAR—In order to ensure provision of flour to the people on government control rates, the working group constituted on the directives of NWFP Chief Minister has assigned the task to DCO Peshawar to determine atta dealers (selling points) and properly monitor them. Similarly, Food Department have been directed to ensure smooth supply of wheat to flour mills and cancel the quota of those mills found involved in malpractices.
