Imran makes Army win in Inter-Services Hockey

Peshawar—PAF deep defender Imran’s poor display chalked out Army’s 5-4 victory in the ongoing Inter-Services Hockey Championship here at Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium on Saturday.
Imran’s unnecessarily delaying ball-tactics on three major occasions in the danger zone provided golden opportunities for the Army strikers to take three early goals lead in the 13th, 19th and 24th minute in a dependable match.
It was PAF second defeat. Earlier Navy defeated PAF by 3-2 in the pool match while super-fit Army have an edge of winning two matches against Navy and PAF.
On ground PAF have an edge over Army because of having the services of four national camp players but poor display of the deep defender Imran and disjointed approaches by their forwards let PAF lost the match on 5-4 before were down 3-1 till the first-half play.

Sohail bags 16 wickets in Quaid Trophy

Karachi—Emerging fast medium bowler Sohail Khan ended with amazing match haul of 16 wickets but his team Sui Southern Gas Company Ltd (SSGCL) batsmen will be facing a challenging task on the final day of their Quaid-e-Azam Cricket Trophy match against WAPDA at Asghar Ali Shah Stadium on Saturday. SSGC will now be needing 328 runs on Sunday in 83 overs to win the match after having dismissed for 226 in their first outing.

Paerson regains ski downhill form to pip Vonn

Saint Moritz, Switzerland—Anja Paerson of Sweden stunned the pre-race favourites to claim victory in the women’s downhill on Saturday, her first World Cup win of the season.
Paerson, who claimed her last downhill success at the end of the 2006 season in Are, Sweden, pipped American Lindsey Vonn by just 0.08secs after scorching the Corviglia run in a time of 1min 39.32sec.
Germany’s Maria Riesch took third place after finishing 0.33sec behind the 26-year-old Swede, with former world champion Renate Goetschl in fourth at 0.38.
Paerson is the current world champion in downhill, super-G and super-combined but despite a hugely successful campaign at the championships in Are, Sweden earlier this year she had struggled with form on the World Cup circuit.
This season she finished way off the podium in this season’s two previous downhill races, claiming 18th place at Aspen, Colorado last week and seventh at Lake Louise, Canada a fortnight ago.

Jehangir Khan awarded honorary doctorate degree

London—Former world champion and President, World Squash Federation, Jahangir Khan who received honorary doctorate degree in recognition of his services for the sport from the London Metropolitan University, has called for greater efforts to pull the game from its present dismal standing in Pakistan.
Speaking to the media persons after receiving the doctorate of philosophy degree on Friday , the 43-year-old six-time former world champion and a record 10-time British Open Champion, lamented at the dwindling fortunes of Squash and said it is painful for him to note that Pakistani players no longer feature in the top list. Jahangir, the first Pakistani sportsman to be bestowed this honour for promoting Squash and for the service to the community, said in the past the Pakistani players used to regularly feature among the top eight in the world but now this is no more as players from the other countries are dominating the international scene.

Mubashar hails girls participation in sports

Lahore —It is a positive sign for the country that our girls are excelling not only in academics but are also making their mark in sports, said Punjab Information Technology minister Mubbashar Luqman.
Addressing the annual sports function of Government Girls College, Wahdat Road here Saturday, he said that physical health leads to healthy minds, and sports help inculcate team spirit, confidence and healthy competition, according to a handout.The minister said that the government has allocated huge funds to promote sports, adding that our sportswomen have shown great talent at the national as well as international level.
