Peshawar—PAF deep defender Imran’s poor display
chalked out Army’s 5-4 victory in the ongoing
Inter-Services Hockey Championship here at Lala
Ayub Hockey Stadium on Saturday.
Imran’s unnecessarily delaying ball-tactics on
three major occasions in the danger zone
provided golden opportunities for the Army
strikers to take three early goals lead in the
13th, 19th and 24th minute in a dependable
match.
It was PAF second defeat. Earlier Navy defeated
PAF by 3-2 in the pool match while super-fit
Army have an edge of winning two matches against
Navy and PAF.
On ground PAF have an edge over Army because of
having the services of four national camp
players but poor display of the deep defender
Imran and disjointed approaches by their
forwards let PAF lost the match on 5-4 before
were down 3-1 till the first-half play.

Saint Moritz, Switzerland—Anja Paerson of Sweden
stunned the pre-race favourites to claim victory
in the women’s downhill on Saturday, her first
World Cup win of the season.
Paerson, who claimed her last downhill success
at the end of the 2006 season in Are, Sweden,
pipped American Lindsey Vonn by just 0.08secs
after scorching the Corviglia run in a time of
1min 39.32sec.
Germany’s Maria Riesch took third place after
finishing 0.33sec behind the 26-year-old Swede,
with former world champion Renate Goetschl in
fourth at 0.38.
Paerson is the current world champion in
downhill, super-G and super-combined but despite
a hugely successful campaign at the
championships in Are, Sweden earlier this year
she had struggled with form on the World Cup
circuit.
This season she finished way off the podium in
this season’s two previous downhill races,
claiming 18th place at Aspen, Colorado last week
and seventh at Lake Louise, Canada a fortnight
ago.
