Salman asks Mirwaiz to join polls

Srinagar— A day after the National Conference president Omar Abdullah urged Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to participate in next Assembly elections, senior Congress leader and India’s former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid advised the Mirwaiz “to accept the ground realities” and participate in polls.
“They should participate in the polls as they know the ground realties of Kashmir. If they participate in elections they will get something out of it,” Khurshid told reporters here.
He was quick to deny meeting any pro-freedom leader during his two-day Valley visit. “No, I didn’t meet any Hurriyat leader. But I’ll be proud if, because of me, the dialogue process succeeds,” he said.
Asked why the dialogue process between Hurriyat (M) and New Delhi has stalled, he said, “There are ups and downs in every dialogue process. Quick-fix agreements shouldn’t be expected. In Vietnam, it took several years to discuss the shape of table on which dialogue process would be held. We shouldn’t give up the hope.”
