Srinagar— Angry residents in Kupwara have
damaged some vehicles, held a Special Police
Officer (SPO) in captivity and left at least
three personnel injured while charging Police
with burning of residential houses in the dead
of night.
Even as Police managed to rescue the SPO,
demonstrators today resorted to stone pelting on
the cavalcade of local MLA who was also
evacuated successfully. Informed sources said
that late last evening, over a hundred residents
of Punzgam (Trehgam) captured a Police party who
were “looking for an opportunity to set on fire
our houses”.
Even as head of the Police party and the local
SHO, Sub Inspector Manzoor Ahmed, managed to
escape with most of his men while leaving behind
his Tata-407 vehicle, residents took into
custody SPO Aijaz Ahmed Bhat S/o Ghulam Hassan
Bhat R/o Gulgam, Kupwara. He was roughed up and

Srinagar— A day after the National Conference
president Omar Abdullah urged Hurriyat
Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to
participate in next Assembly elections, senior
Congress leader and India’s former External
Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid advised the
Mirwaiz “to accept the ground realities” and
participate in polls.
“They should participate in the polls as they
know the ground realties of Kashmir. If they
participate in elections they will get something
out of it,” Khurshid told reporters here.
He was quick to deny meeting any pro-freedom
leader during his two-day Valley visit. “No, I
didn’t meet any Hurriyat leader. But I’ll be
proud if, because of me, the dialogue process
succeeds,” he said.
Asked why the dialogue process between Hurriyat
(M) and New Delhi has stalled, he said, “There
are ups and downs in every dialogue process.
Quick-fix agreements shouldn’t be expected. In
Vietnam, it took several years to discuss the
shape of table on which dialogue process would
be held. We shouldn’t give up the hope.”
